“In my opinion the development of photography and film have changed traditional art tremendously. People no longer need to get portraits painted, when we have such a cheaper alternative as digital photography and video. But more fundamentally there seems to be the creation and embrace of art movements that depict everyday imagery in new ways that cannot be captured with a camera. Surrealism, pop art, minimalism, and abstract art are some good examples. Would these exist without the invention of photography? Would they have been embraced to such a degree? How much do you feel that photography has changed traditional art?” - Mr Leal. “Definitely photography has had a huge impact on artists and changing the way we depict imagery. The introduction of photography has created this domino effect, from the early 1800s when the photograph was invented, developed the breakdown in realism in art (painting, drawing and sculpture). Can you say that each subsequent movement is a result of the photograph dominating realism therefore cubism, pointalism, abstraction, etc developed? Possibly. What will be our next major influence on change in Art? I think it is already happening, and that is technology e.g. internet, computers, gadgets etc. with much work being new media and electronic installations etc.” - Creativechrissy. [1]
