Very few domestic cats live in social groups and will often associate with offspring and mates only. This means that cats are rarely able to form bonds with other cats, forcing them to become defensive when another cat is in the area. This often occurs when each animal seeks to obtain the same resource. This can include territory, potential mates and food. In some circumstances, the clever animal is able to obtain the resource successfully rather than the strongest if physical confrontation is avoided. (Broom and Fraser, 2007)
