1) I love to make on the spot spontaneous music with looping pedals but I rarely actually notate these tunes, unless I am purposefully composing using the pedals as a recording ideas device. 2) If I was composing (notating) I like to give myself a lot of lead up time to let ideas come organically and have time to settle, especially if it is a large scale composition (like an orchestra for example). I will first think of a theme, concept or visual then let that bounce around in my head for a while before I even write one note. if I give it time, 99% of the time I will have flashes of melodies of chords and have to furiously write them down! I often record myself singing phrases in my phone then transcribe them when I'm at the piano next, then the writing begins! Once I have an idea musically how the piece will sit I write an extensive plan - right down to the timing of specific sections. I stick together heaps of paper and literally draw the piece. this will be a detailed overview of how the piece flows. 3) Collaboration - I love writing with other people, bouncing ideas around, improvising together then transcribing bits we like and flesh it out from there.
